The small wineries we visit make their living from selling wine, rather than from tasting fees. Enter Beechworth and feel as though you’ve stepped back in time – its wide cobblestone streets and European style buildings are relics of a gold mining past. This quaint, historical town is filled with personality, from its old-fashioned sweet shops (try the homemade fudge!) and artisan ice-creameries to the famous Beechworth Bakery. Indulge yourself with Beechworth’s wide range of handcrafted beers, wines and spirits at its many breweries and wineries, all as filled with character as the town itself.

KING RIVER BREWING

King River Brewing is situated along the Wangaratta-Whitfield Road in the Victorian High Country. This microbrewery has stunning outdoor seating and an ambient indoor atmosphere, with friendly staff and a range of flavoursome, high-quality beers to choose from. Grab a pizza or a tasting platter and enjoy all this boutique brewery has to offer.

BRIGHT BREWERY

Founded in 2005 and driven by a passion for great beer and a love of Bright’s pristine alpine environment, the Bright Brewery never fails to disappoint. This independent family business aims to be authentic and sustainable, making their specialised beers with all-natural ingredients. Sit on the balcony overlooking the river and enjoy a handcrafted beer or watch the brewing action unfold next to the bar.

BRIDGE ROAD BREWERS

Located in the historical town of Beechworth, Bridge Road Brewers is famous for its artisan food and beer, as well as its leisurely, family-friendly atmosphere. Pizzas are handmade with local and seasonal produce, and the taproom features 20 rotating house-brewed beers. A family-owned and run business, Bridge Road Brewers was born out of values of independence, authenticity and quality, and these show in their brewing and friendly service.

BILLSON’S BREWERY

Billson’s Brewery in Beechworth uses historical recipes and Beechworth’s pristine alpine water to create its renowned beers, spirits, and cordials. Enjoy the sunshine in their gorgeous beer garden and bring back flavours of childhood with Billson’s famed Portello or Raspberry Vinegar Cordial. Alternatively, sit in their family friendly taproom or Factory Brewing Deck and enjoy a cold one while you watch the brewers at work.

CRANK HANDLE BREWERY

Crank Handle Brewery is a small craft brewery in Tawonga South (Mount Beauty). Situated at the base of Mount Bogong, the tallest mountain in Victoria, the alpine views are nothing short of stunning. This microbrewery serves a range of traditional, handcrafted beers that are brewed onsite. Made by passionate locals and inspired by the fresh alpine water used for brewing, this beer is crisp and unique, a true pleasure for any beer-lover.

MITTA MITTA BREWING CO.

From its paddock beginnings, Mitta Mitta Brewing Co. is truly a hand-built brewery. This independently owned brewery began with the passion of two friends and was supported by local crowdfunding in 2017. Hops are grown onsite in Mitta Mitta, without the use of chemicals, and fresh mountain water is sourced from the property. Located in the glorious Mitta Valley, this boutique brewery has a homely atmosphere, friendly staff, and a stunning beer garden.

BLACK DOG BREWERY

Located at Taminick Cellars Winery, near Glenrowan, Black Dog Brewery is a hidden gem famous for its high-quality craft beers. A family brewery with a four-generation long lineage, Black Dog Brewery offers a range of boutique beers and wines. Enjoy a freshly made, wood-fired pizza and watch the hills and vines turn golden as the sun sets in the stunning King Valley.

HURDLE CREEK STILL – SMALL BATCH GIN DISTILLERY

A family-owned distillery with artisan gins made from locally-sourced grain – what more could you want? Hurdle Creek Still, near the town of Milawa, uses traditional methods and a blend of local and native botanicals to create its unique flavour and smooth grain character. Make sure to visit The StillHouse - the cosy, transformed farm shed where Hurdle Creek’s famous gin is made, so you can watch the still in action while sampling its products.

NIGHTINGALE BROS ALPINE PRODUCE AND CIDER

Located in Wandiligong, Nightingale Bros Alpine Produce and Cider is like a breath of fresh air. This family-run business has been growing alpine apples in the King Valley region since 1954 and make their very own boutique Alpine Cider and Sparkling Apple Juice. The orchard also offers a large array of local produce, so make sure to drop past and stock up on fresh homegrown apples, berries, seasonal fruit, and nuts.

HOBBLEDEHOY DISTILLERY AND CAFÉ

The Hobbledehoy Distillery and Café is well worth a visit if you’re passing through Whitfield. It uses local produce for its meals and offers a large range of delectable cakes that are baked fresh in-house, so you won’t be disappointed. Even better, they’ll be opening their own distillery in the next few months – how could you say no to that?

BACKWOODS DISTILLING CO.

Located in the picturesque town of Yackandandah, this craft distillery produces small batch, high-quality whisky and gin. Experience tastings and tours and watch the production process first-hand at Backwoods Distillery. Friendly staff will spoil you with handcrafted spirits, made from 100% Australian farmed and malted grains for a truly indulgent experience.

REED & CO. DISTILLERY

Reed & Co. Distillery is another jewel in Bright’s crown – a delightful, family owned and operated craft distillery in Victoria’s alpine region. Taking inspiration from the beautiful Northeast region of Victoria, the ‘Spirit Lab’ label is a line of boutique, limited edition, and seasonal release gins. They offer indoor and outdoor seating, a cocktail bar and gourmet platters made with local produce.

Brown Brothers is one of Australia's oldest and most loved wineries. With four generations of wine making experience, the Brown family are producing some of Australia's most innovative wine from their King Valley Winery in the stunning Victorian high country.

DAL ZOTTO WINES

Visit Dal Zotto Wines, the Australian home of Prosecco. This family-owned and operated winery was established in 1987 by the Dal Zotto family, migrants from Italy’s Veneto region. They wanted to bring the values of family, tradition, and innovation to Australia’s winemaking scene, and were the first Australian vineyard to plant Prosecco vines. Based in Whitfield, they remain famous for their quality wines and Italian-inspired menu filled with local produce and homegrown veggies picked straight from the garden.

PIZZINI WINES

Pizzini Wines is based in Whitfield and was founded in 1978 with a commitment to quality produce, family, and Italian heritage. They offer artisan wines and homecooked meals, personalised tastings, and even Italian cooking classes! Enjoy the serenity of the King Valley with their outdoor seating or the cosiness of an Italian home in their indoor restaurant.

WOOD PARK WINES

Wood Park Wines has a strong focus on ensuring their farming practices are sustainable, with minimal chemical use. They use a combination of traditional and modern techniques to create their famous artisan wines. Only a short drive from Wangaratta, Wood Park Wines is a must-see for wine-lovers.
